My husband, God Bless him, does not understand my need to find furniture on the cheap and transform it with a coat of paint. He once told me that he'd like it if I'd find one, perfect, efficient way to organize our house and let the furniture remain in that place forever.
Can't be done. I like to switch out our furniture; I like to paint it and transform it into something new. For instance, a dark book shelf that was fine for the living room needed to be brightened up to suit our daughter's bedroom. I'm not going to post that picture because it was a cheap, laminate bookshelf that we spray painted (because painting laminate is just sad--it scratches easily). I'd have preferred a yard sale for that piece, but I think Chris dies a little bit inside each time I dispose of something (he actually remembers the cost of everything--it sucks).
Onwards and upwards, though...
This first post I am going to dedicate to one of my favorite pieces. I don't believe I have a before picture, but here is my after:
It was a beautiful dresser before. I bought it at an auction for $100. We live in a very, very dry climate and the wood was so dry it was painful to see. I would rub it with lemon oil to try and moisten it, but I think the damage was done. Either that or my mom sent me a picture of a dresser that had been painted ombre, and I was inspired. She had some gray paint left over from a project. The frame and bottom drawer are the original color and then I took three separate containers and added progressively more white paint (that I already had) to the gray until I thought the colors were distinct enough from each other to stand out. The hardware is original (one of my favorite things about the piece). After the paint dried I used a spray poly to seal it. Don't love the spray poly. Next time I'm going to try something different. The shine is great, but it felt sticky for awhile and the coverage was a little rough.
Also, next time I do three custom colors I will try to remember that touch ups, unless I've saved samples of each cannot be done. Live and learn.
